2021 Workshop on Sustainable Environmental Sensing Systems (SESSy)

In 2015, heads of state and government adopted the “Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development" that include 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) where the environment underlies each of the goals. Moreover, the World Economic Forum (WEF) in its 2018 report “Internet of Things: Guidelines for Sustainability" states that the Internet of Things could be a game-changer for sustainability, contributing to achieving both the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and the UN’s 2030 mission. 

The focus of this workshop is on the sustainability of the proposed solutions, that is, on works that consider at least one of sustainability's three main pillars: the economy, society, and the environment:
Economy: e.g. potential cost savings for users through the use of the proposed solution;
Environment: e.g. developing environmentally sound solutions, ensuring standards are met;
Society: e.g. enhancing safety in production, use or end-of-life, stakeholder perception of solutions.

In this context, different challenges need to be addressed, from designing and developing more sustainable, ecological,  and efficient smart sensing objects, to turning to the general public for deploying such systems and crowdsourcing the collection of data using IoT and mobile sensing devices.

With the “Sustainable Environmental Sensing Systems” (SESSy) workshop we aim at presenting and showcasing the latest advances in sustainable environmental sensing systems to monitor different urban and rural conditions to improve the people's quality of life, towards sustainable development. 

Contributions must be in the form of a document of maximum 6 pages, with interesting, novel results or completed work in any of the topics call.
